About

My name is Nichola Gensler and I make functional wheel-thrown pottery from my studio in Sheffield.

I started making pottery after a career in the hospitality industry. Initially working as a chef, then pastry chef and then baker, I set up and ran a busy London bakery for almost 10 years.

There are many similarities between production pottery and cooking; in the practical processes and in the repeated movement of creating and re-creating identical forms.

My experience in kitchens has given me an insight into food presentation which I draw on when I make my work. I like to think about the way in which a piece will be used, what a particular plate will hold or how much custard you could fit into a bowl for example. But I also like to think about the way in which a piece will be held when used. That link between the hands of the maker and the hands of the user are very important to me.
